THE 22nd JUDICIAL DISTRICT Veterans COURT

Veterans Court involves veterans charged with felony or misdemeanor criminal offenses who are diverted to substance dependency and/or mental illness treatment as required.  The court substitutes a treatment problem solving model for traditional court processing.  Eligible veterans are identified through specialized screening and assessments and voluntarily participate in a judicially supervised treatment plan that a team of court staff, veteran health care professionals, veteran peer mentors and mental health professionals develop.  At regular status hearing before the judge, veterans are reviewed for adherence to court conditions.  Services can include stabilization and other services related to mental health/trauma counseling, employment and skills training assistance, housing referrals and Veterans Administration involvement.
